Death Toll Rises in Compostela Valley Landslide (25 dead and 100 Missing)

Philippines is facing another calamity that killed 25 people and 100 missing, a landslide in Compostela Valley, Mindanao (Southern Philippines). This is a very sad news, Mindanao is still in recovery process because of Sendong typhoon that devastated the province and killed almost a thousand of people.

25 persons were killed and 100 more missing in a landslide at a mining site in the province of Compostela Valley earlier today (Thursday) which took place at around 3:45 a.m.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the landslide occurred at the mining site in Purok Diat Uno, Barangay Napnapan, Pantukan town due to continuous rain these last few days.

Police Senior Inspector Werenfredo Reidor said in an earlier interview that more than 100 people were possibly buried in the landslide.
“Bandang 4 a.m., may nagreport na may nangyaring landslide… Initially may report sa amin na may narecover na 6 na sa Diat Uno, then may sampu sa Diat Dos. Ang pagkasabi may higit 100 posibleng natabunan sa pagguho,” he said.

The local government of Compostela Valley has ordered a forced evacuation for residents living in similar high-risk areas in the province to prevent more casualties.

It may be recalled that April last year, 13 persons were killed while 100 were displaced because of a massive landslide which happened in the same town in Compostela Valley.

New User Features

UI refinements for simplicity and speed

The user interface is refined in many ways across the system, making it easier to learn, faster to use, and more power-efficient. A simplified visual theme of colors against black brings vividness and contrast to the notification bar, menus, and other parts of the UI. Changes in menus and settings make it easier for the user to navigate and control the features of the system and device.

Faster, more intuitive text input

The Android soft keyboard is redesigned and optimized for faster text input and editing. The keys themselves are reshaped and repositioned for improved targeting, making them easier to see and press accurately, even at high speeds. The keyboard also displays the current character and dictionary suggestions in a larger, more vivid style that is easier to read.
The keyboard adds the capability to correct entered words from suggestions in the dictionary. As the user selects a word already entered, the keyboard displays suggestions that the user can choose from, to replace the selection. The user can also switch to voice input mode to replace the selection. Smart suggestions let the user accept a suggestion and then return to correct it later, if needed, from the original set of suggestions.
New multitouch key-chording lets the user quickly enter numbers and symbols by pressing Shift+<letter> and ?123+<symbol>, without needing to manually switch input modes. From certain keys, users can also access a popup menu of accented characters, numbers, and symbols by holding the key and sliding to select a character.

One-touch word selection and copy/paste

When entering text or viewing a web page, the user can quickly select a word by press-hold, then copy to the clipboard and paste. Pressing on a word enters a free-selection mode — the user can adjust the selection area as needed by dragging a set of bounding arrows to new positions, then copy the bounded area by pressing anywhere in the selection area. For text entry, the user can slide-press to enter a cursor mode, then reposition the cursor easily and accurately by dragging the cursor arrow. With both the selection and cursor modes, no use of a trackball is needed.

Improved power management

The Android system takes a more active role in managing apps that are keeping the device awake for too long or that are consuming CPU while running in the background. By managing such apps — closing them if appropriate — the system helps ensure best possible performance and maximum battery life.
The system also gives the user more visibility over the power being consumed by system components and running apps. The Application settings provides an accurate overview of how the battery is being used, with details of the usage and relative power consumed by each component or application.

Control over applications

A shortcut to the Manage Applications control now appears in the Options Menu in the Home screen and Launcher, making it much easier to check and manage application activity. Once the user enters Manage Applications, a new Running tab displays a list of active applications and the storage and memory being used by each. The user can read further details about each application and if necessary stop an application or report feedback to its developer.

New ways of communicating, organizing

An updated set of standard applications lets the user take new approaches to managing information and relationships.

Internet calling

The user can make voice calls over the internet to other users who have SIP accounts. The user can add an internet calling number (a SIP address) to any Contact and can initiate a call from Quick Contact or Dialer. To use internet calling, the user must create an account at the SIP provider of their choice — SIP accounts are not provided as part of the internet calling feature. Additionally, support for the platform's SIP and internet calling features on specific devices is determined by their manufacturers and associated carriers.

Near-field communications

An NFC Reader application lets the user read and interact with near-field communication (NFC) tags. For example, the user can “touch” or “swipe” an NFC tag that might be embedded in a poster, sticker, or advertisement, then act on the data read from the tag. A typical use would be to read a tag at a restaurant, store, or event and then rate or register by jumping to a web site whose URL is included in the tag data. NFC communication relies on wireless technology in the device hardware, so support for the platform's NFC features on specific devices is determined by their manufacturers.

Downloads management

The Downloads application gives the user easy access to any file downloaded from the browser, email, or another application. Downloads is built on an completely new download manager facility in the system that any other applications can use, to more easily manage and store their downloads.

Camera

The application now lets the user access multiple cameras on the device, including a front-facing camera, if available.

New Developer Features

Android 2.3 delivers a variety of features and APIs that let developers bring new types of applications to the Android platform.

Enhancements for gaming

Performance

Android 2.3 includes a variety of improvements across the system that make common operations faster and more efficient for all applications. Of particular interest to game developers are:

Concurrent garbage collector — The Dalivik VM introduces a new, concurrent garbage collector that minimizes application pauses, helping to ensure smoother animation and increased responsiveness in games and similar applications.
Faster event distribution — The plaform now handles touch and keyboard events faster and more efficiently, minimizing CPU utilization during event distribution. The changes improve responsiveness for all applications, but especially benefit games that use touch events in combination with 3D graphics or other CPU-intensive operations.
Updated video drivers — The platform uses updated third-party video drivers that improve the efficiency of OpenGL ES operations, for faster overall 3D graphics performance.

Native input and sensor events

Applications that use native code can now receive and process input and sensor events directly in their native code, which dramatically improves efficiency and responsiveness.
Native libraries exposed by the platform let applications handle the same types of input events as those available through the framework. Applications can receive events from all supported sensor types and can enable/disable specific sensors and manage event delivery rate and queueing.

Gyroscope and other new sensors, for improved 3D motion processing

Android 2.3 adds API support for several new sensor types, including gyroscope, rotation vector, linear acceleration, gravity, and barometer sensors. Applications can use the new sensors in combination with any other sensors available on the device, to track three-dimensional device motion and orientation change with high precision and accuracy. For example, a game application could use readings from a gyroscope and accelerometer on the device to recognize complex user gestures and motions, such as tilt, spin, thrust, and slice.

Open API for native audio

The platform provides a software implementation of Khronos OpenSL ES, a standard API that gives applications access to powerful audio controls and effects from native code. Applications can use the API to manage audio devices and control audio input, output, and processing directly from native code.

Native graphics management

The platform provides an interface to its Khronos EGL library, which lets applications manage graphics contexts and create and manage OpenGL ES textures and surfaces from native code.

Native access to Activity lifecycle, window management

Native applications can declare a new type of Activity class, NativeActivity whose lifecycle callbacks are implemented directly in native code. The NativeActivity and its underlying native code run in the system just as do other Activities — they run in the application's system process and execute on the application's main UI thread, and they receive the same lifecycle callbacks as do other Activities.
The platform also exposes native APIs for managing windows, including the ability to lock/unlock the pixel buffer to draw directly into it. Through the API, applications can obtain a native window object associated with a framework Surface object and interact with it directly in native code.

Native access to assets, storage

Applications can now access a native Asset Manager API to retrieve application assets directly from native code without needing to go through JNI. If the assets are compressed, the platform does streaming decompression as the application reads the asset data. There is no longer a limit on the size of compressed .apk assets that can be read.
Additionally, applications can access a native Storage Manager API to work directly with OBB files downloaded and managed by the system. Note that although platform support for OBB is available in Android 2.3, development tools for creating and managing OBB files will not be available until early 2011.

Robust native development environment

The Android NDK (r5 or higher) provides a complete set of tools, toolchains, and libraries for developing applications that use the rich native environment offered by the Android 2.3 platform. For more information or to download the NDK, please see the Android NDK page.

New forms of communication

Internet telephony

Developers can now add SIP-based internet telephony features to their applications. Android 2.3 includes a full SIP protocol stack and integrated call management services that let applications easily set up outgoing and incoming voice calls, without having to manage sessions, transport-level communication, or audio record or playback directly.
Support for the platform's SIP and internet calling features on specific devices is determined by their manufacturers and associated carriers.

Near Field Communications (NFC)

The platform's support for Near Field Communications (NFC) lets developers get started creating a whole new class of applications for Android. Developers can create new applications that offer proximity-based information and services to users, organizations, merchants, and advertisers.
Using the NFC API, applications can respond to NFC tags “discovered” as the user “touches” an NFC-enabled device to elements embedded in stickers, smart posters, and even other devices. When a tag of interest is collected, applications can respond to the tag, read messages from it, and then store the messages, prompting the user as needed.
NFC communication relies on wireless technology in the device hardware, so support for the platform's NFC features on specific devices is determined by their manufacturers.

Rich multimedia

Mixable audio effects

A new audio effects API lets developers easily create rich audio environments by adding equalization, bass boost, headphone virtualization (widened soundstage), and reverb to audio tracks and sounds. Developers can mix multiple audio effects in a local track or apply effects globally, across multiple tracks.

Support for new media formats

The platform now offers built-in support for the VP8 open video compression format and the WebM open container format. The platform also adds support for AAC encoding and AMR wideband encoding (in software), so that applications can capture higher quality audio than narrowband.

Access to multiple cameras

The Camera API now lets developers access any cameras that are available on a device, including a front-facing camera. Applications can query the platform for the number of cameras on the device and their types and characteristics, then open the camera needed. For example, a video chat application might want to access a front-facing camera that offers lower-resolution, while a photo application might prefer a back-facing camera that offers higher-resolution.

SAN FRANCISCO – The next iPhone comes out June 24 and will have a higher-resolution screen, longer battery life and thinner design.

CEO Steve Jobs opened Apple Inc.'s annual conference for software developers Monday by demonstrating the iPhone 4, which will cost $199 or $299 in the U.S. with a two-year AT&T contract, depending on the capacity. The iPhone 3GS, which debuted last year, will still be available, for $99.

Some of the mystery surrounding Apple's latest creation had been punctured in April, when the tech blog Gizmodo bought a lost iPhone prototype for $5,000 and posted pictures of the unit. Apple demanded it back, and authorities have been investigating whether a Gizmodo editor broke any laws.

Buffeted by privacy snafus and the lingering fallout from a damning, years-old instant messaging thread, Facebook chief exec Mark Zuckerberg switched into full-on damage control Monday, confessing that the sprawling social network had "missed the mark" when it comes to its complex privacy controls — and pledging to do better.
In an open letter published Monday in the Washington Post (whose chairman, Donald E. Graham, just so happens to sit on Facebook's board of directors), Zuckerberg wrote that Facebook has been "growing quickly" and admitted that "sometimes we move too fast."

"Many of you thought our controls were too complex," Zuckerberg's letter reads. "Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls" — uh, you can say that again — "but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark."

Zuckerberg promised, in "coming weeks," privacy controls that will be "much simpler to use" — including an "easy way to turn off all third-party services" that can access your account.

Docs.com, also known as Docs for Facebook, officially launched at Facebook's F8 conference on Wednesday. Created by Microsoft's FUSE Labs, the online app allows you to create, edit, and share Microsoft Office documents with your Facebook friends.

As of now, the service is still in beta; anyone can view documents, but in order to edit or create new ones, you'll have to join a wait list. I was able to take an early peek at the full functionality, though. Here's a look at what I found.

Samsung unveils U250 and U200, all in one touchscreen PCs.

Samsung, the largest technology giant has announced a pair of all in one touchscreen computers, called the Samsung U250 and U200 based on Intel Pentium Dual Core processor.

The Samsung U250 features 23-inch full HD display with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution and is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo rated at 2.2GHz, 3GB RAM, a 512MB Geforce G310M video module and a 500GB hard disk drive.

The other model, called Samsung U200 also feature similar configuration but with low resolution of 1600x900 pixels, Intel Pentium Dual Core processor clocked at 2.2GHz, and 2GB RAM.

Both devices run on Microsoft’s Windows 7 Home Premium and a front facing webcam and will be available by next month. The two models are visually different and U250 monitor comes with a stand.

Mozilla yesterday released updates for its Firefox Web browser to shore up vulnerabilities in the 3.5.x and 3.0.x browser versions.

Three critical flaws (MSFA 2010-01, 2010-02 and 2010-03) all involve memory-related errors that could potentially allow an attacker to run any command on a victim PC. According to the advisories, the holes are already fixed in the recently released Firefox 3.6.

The patches also fix two other flaws that could lead to cross-site scripting attacks, but are only rated moderate (MSFA 2010-04 and 2010-05).

The updates are available for Windows, Mac and Linux, and will bump up the browser versions to 3.5.8 or 3.0.18. If you haven't already seen the automatic update pop-up, head to Help | Check for Updates to get the patch.

Will the company that revolutionized Internet search send the Apple (AAPL) iPhone looking for answers?

At a press gathering on Tuesday, Google (GOOG) unveiled the Nexus One, a Google-branded smartphone that will run on the search giant's Android operating system. Some analysts say Google's new device, which is being built by HTC of Taiwan based on Google's specifications, will deal a stiff blow to Apple's hegemony in the smartphone arena.

Where could Google succeed where other competitors have failed? The Nexus One boasts speed improvements and enhanced camera capabilities, and the device will be sold unlocked. So rather than being forced to sign a contract with AT&T (T), a service provider that has been criticized for network mishaps and poor customer service ratings in the last year, buyers may purchase service plans separately from the device.

The Nexus One is also nice to look at, says Michael Gartenberg, the vice president of strategy and analysis for Interpret, a market researcher in Los Angeles. "Google's Nexus One is a beautifully designed device," he says. "It looks like Google looked at the iPhone and said we can do better."
For now, the iPhone is the dominant device in the sector. And critics of Google's device say the company's design improvements offer only slight advantages over existing devices and won't necessarily shake iPhone from its perch yet.
SmartMoney took a closer look at how Apple's iPhone and Google's new Nexus One match up:

The unlocked version of the Nexus One, which will be sold directly to consumers via a new web store hosted by Google, will cost $529. A locked version of the phone, which will be sold initially by T-Mobile, will cost $179 with a two-year contract that will cost roughly $80 a month.
Apple's iPhone 3GS now costs $199 with a two-year contract with AT&T.

News of Google's Chrome operating system is sending waves though the tech world with some saying the OS signals the beginning of the end for Microsoft and others who say Google will fall flat on its face and fail. Without more specifics it's hard to say for sure how big of a splash the OS will really make. Google pledges to release more information regarding the OS later this summer.
This leaves us with lots of questions and few answers. Until Google decides to share more, we'll try to make the best of what we've got in this FAQ.

Google Chrome OS

What is Chrome OS?

Chrome OS is a Linux-based operating system in development by Google. It is intended to focus on Web applications while running a fast and simple interface, based off Google's existing Chrome browser.

Who will use it?

Chrome OS will initially target the netbook market, but Google plans to offer the operating system for computers all the way up to full-size desktops. By supporting both x86 and ARM architectures, it seems most computers and possibly some mobile devices will be able to run Chrome OS.

What will it look like?

Unknown, but we have clues. Google says Chrome OS will run a version of the Chrome browser with "a new windowing system," so it's possible that we'll see typical browser windows fused with a dock full of commonly-used online apps.

What will become of my computer's desktop?

Only Google knows what Chrome OS's desktop will look like, or whether there will be one in the traditional sense. It's tempting to compare to Android, which in its mobile form stacks apps into rows and columns, but Google stresses that these are separate operating systems. The Linux kernel is flexible, so anything's possible.

How will my computer stay secure?

Google says it will design Chrome OS's security infrastructure so users "don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates." It seems likely, then, that protection will be built into the operating system. Of course, some questionable security decisions in Chrome itself means there's reason for concern.

No computer is truly virus-proof. What will happen if mine gets one?

Good question. Indeed, Linux tends to dodge the bullet on viruses and malware, but only because it's not targeted as much as Windows. Chrome OS will raise the profile of Linux, making it an attractive target for virus makers. It's not known what security measures will be in place to save a compromised computer.
Should I be worried about privacy when entrusting my OS to Google?
This issue has already raised eyebrows by some privacy advocates. Earlier, the company took heat for the way it collected data from Chrome users, and had to make concessions. Until Google can explain how an entire operating system won't be any more intrusive than its existing data-collection practices on the Web, privacy is a valid concern.

Will Chrome OS computers resemble Macs or Windows-based PCs at all?

Keep in mind that Google truly intends for Chrome OS to be a Web-centric operating system. The Official Google Blog said the company is "working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year." We could see a new line of computers built specifically with Chrome OS in mind.

Will we see applications exclusive to Chrome OS?
Unlikely, given that the operating system stresses Web apps above all. Furthermore, Google says Web applications "will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform."
Will we see applications that won't run on Chrome OS?
Without a doubt. If Chrome OS could perform every task, it'd be another Windows or OS X, and that's not what Google is trying to do. Don't expect to run Crysis, or Minesweeper.

Will "Favorite Application X" run on Chrome OS?

That depends on whether the software maker supports the OS and whether Google is even interested in hosting the program. It's conceivable that Microsoft won't support a Chrome OS-compatible Office suite, but Google could get around that by building out its Docs suite to match.

When will Chrome OS be released?

It will become available later this year, first for outside programmers to begin tinkering. It'll reach the netbook market in the second half of 2010, according to sources quoted in The New York Times.

We've known for some time now that Sony Ericsson (SE) is working on a Google Android-based mobile phone, but the company has been keeping mum on details. However, pictures leaked by a Danish site appear to reveal Sony Ericsson's upcoming Android phone, and it looks like a good one.

Code-named Rachael, Sony Ericsson's Android phone will be announced later this year, according to information obtained by the Danish Mobil magazine. The phone will be part of SE's XPERIA series, which so far includes the Windows Mobile-based X1 model.
And as SE joined the Open Handset Alliance in December last year, it was shaping out quite clearly that the Swedish company would join the Android-running smartphone army. Mobil says that the Android-loving SE Rachel is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform (QSD8250), wich would give the phone processor speeds of up to 1GHz and 7.2Mbit per second HSPA downlink speeds.

The leaked pictures also show the SE's upcoming Android phone featuring an 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash. At the top of the phone a 3.5mm headphone jack and a miniUSB port are also present. No specific details on the phone's display size or resolution were released, but the Danish magazine says it has a pressure-sensitive touchscreen.

Some of the specifications of SE's Android phone are looking very good in comparison to other smartphones on the market today. An 8.1-megapixel camera would be most powerful on an Android handset yet, and remarkably better than the 3-megapixel camera on the latest iPhone 3GS. On the Android realm, the HTC Hero and the Samsung Galaxy have only a 5-megapixel camera.

It's highly likely that SE's Rachel will run on the upcoming 2.0 version of Google Android operating system, which is also expected to be released toward the end of this year. As for Adobe Flash, it is yet unclear whether this phone will feature this capability.

We all know that Motorola is also one the big companies that developed and produced stylish mobile phones in the market hence,Karma QA1 is another great innovation. I'm sure people will surely like it.

Motorola's Karma QA1 slider phone aims squarely at social networking butterflies, allowing them to flit between Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and other services with a minimum of keystrokes.

The compact 3G/quad-band GSM phone, available today from AT&T Wireless ($79 after rebate with two-year plan), measures 3.5 by 2.5 inches and has a two-megapixel digital camera/camcorder with 8X digital zoom and an assisted GPS (aGPS) receiver. A stubby, but serviceable QWERTY keypad slides down from behind a 2.5-inch QVGA display.

The glass faceplate (as opposed to lighter plastic) gives the unit a small bit of heft and a solid feel, but at 5 ounces, the unit is lightweight. Large home screen icons identify the social networking services, which are accessed via a large mouse button, while the QWERTY keyboard is large enough for comfortable thumb typing. The phone keypad is embedded on the left side of the QWERTY array.

Multimedia features include large speakers, a digital music player capable of playing back RealAudio files, streaming video support, and a microSD slot for removable media with capacities of up to 16GB. Also included is the AT&T Navigator turn-by-turn street navigation application.

Text messages are stored in conversation format, making it easy to keep up with the thread of a series of messages and the camera and camcorder can be used to upload content to social media service.
